CHRISTOPHER DOMINIQUE – JAZZ EX SMOLANDIA VOL. 2
Release: November 9, 2025
On November 9, pianist and producer Christopher Dominique releases Jazz ex Smolandia vol. 2 – a continuation of his acclaimed project to revive the forgotten folk music of Småland through jazz, improvisation, and storytelling.
The album draws on songs, marches, and polskas from old Smålandic manuscripts and archives but transforms them into a new soundscape where the borders between folk, blues, and modern jazz dissolve. Dominique lets the melodies breathe and evolve – sometimes tenderly, sometimes through bold harmonic leaps – yet always with respect for the people and stories that once shaped them.
Performing alongside Filip Runesson (violin) and Johnny Åhman (double bass), Dominique is joined by guest musicians Kalle Moraeus, Monica and Carl-Axel Dominique, Ola Salo, Joel Andersson, and the Swedish national folk musicians Ulrika Gunnarsson and Pontus Estling. Together they build a musical bridge between past traditions and the contemporary improvisational scene.
Among the album’s highlights are Song From Svenarum, featuring Monica and Carl-Axel Dominique performing with their three sons – Jonas, Joakim, and Johannes – and Böndernas Afsked från Gästabud (The Peasants’ Farewell from the Feast), dedicated to the late folk musician and historian Magnus Gustafsson, whose lifelong work preserving Sweden’s musical heritage deeply inspired Dominique.
Parts of the album were recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, and mastered by Alex Wharton (The Beatles, Paul McCartney).
With Jazz ex Smolandia vol. 2, Christopher Dominique continues his musical and historical journey through Småland, ensuring that these beautiful melodies may live on for generations to come.
